are actually piezo-electric pedometers, also called accelerometers by those “in the know.”  They use the technology of a piezo-electric strain gauge (which has no moving parts) to accurately record each step taken, even at slower speeds.

The strain gauge is a piece of ceramic that bends to measure the force of impact—in this case, the force of a person's foot striking the ground.  NEW-LIFESTYLES' engineers liken the strain gauge to the diving board of a swimming pool—the harder one jumps on the board, the more it bends.  Thus, the beauty of the strain gauge is that it bends whether it is worn vertically on a waistband, or if it tilts at an angle, due to a protruding waistline.

For this reason, researchers proclaim the NL-series piezo-electric pedometers to be better for those of us with bigger bodies.  Larger tummies can push otherwise accurate, simple pedometers (like the DIGI-WALKER) forward, causing them to miscount steps.  Anticipating this potential measurement problem, NEW-LIFESTYLES engineered the NL-series pedometers for their flexibility in body placement and accuracy in detecting movement (both volume and intensity) on a variety of body types and on all body shapes and sizes.

The NL-series pedometers also boast 7-day memory and metal hybrid clips.  The NL-1000 also has an MVPA™ (moderate-to-vigorous physical activity) timer which puts the accelerometer to work counting ONLY the time you spend in moderate-to-vigorous activity.  Finally, with the NL-1000, there’s an easy way to see if you are meeting the CDC's recommendation of at least 30 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity for adults or more than 60 minutes of moderate-to vigorous-physical activity for kids.  We can’t think of a better tool for weight control!

Healthy Snacks For Everybody: Fresh Salsa Recipe

Here’s a fresh, healthy salsa with just enough zip. It's a great starter for your festive Cinco de Mayo gathering and it's good for you!

1 can chick peas, drained
1 can black-eyed peas, cooked & drained
1 can corn, cooked & drained
3-4 medium size tomatoes, chopped
1 medium red onion, chopped
~ ½ bunch of cilantro, washed & chopped
Seasoning: Italian dressing, garlic, pepper, and olive oil

Cook black-eyed peas and corn just enough to warm (be careful not to cook them too soft) and drain afterwards. In a large bowl, mix all canned and chopped ingredients. To season, add Italian dressing (enough to coat mixed ingredients), garlic, pepper (to taste), and olive oil (~1-2 teaspoons). Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes (the taste gets better as chilled).
