Are Your Students Getting Their MVPA? NEW Special PEP Grant Packages.

The word is out among researchers and educators —pedometers work to make more people more active more often!  The research findings are irrefutable.  In an environment where budgets are tight and funding is often hard to come by, it is more important than ever to base a program on effective, evidence-based methods.   That said, it should be obvious that pedometers should be a BIG part of any physical education/physical activity program.

They are supported by research, and the accuracy of the device has been published.  And best yet, they provide outcomes!  That’s why the NL-series piezo-electric pedometers (or accelerometers) are called activity monitors—because that’s what they do, monitor physical activity all day for 7 to 200 days, depending on the NL-series model's memory capability.

This is technology at its best.  We can’t just “have a hunch” whether people are meeting the standards identified for moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA).  We need an effective and efficient way to measure the results.  NEW-LIFESTYLES’ NL-series accelerometers are the answer. Revolutionizing pedometers, NEW-LIFESTYLES NL-series accelerometers use advanced technology to count steps accurately on small bodies as well as large bodies and display time spent in MVPA.  Used just like other pedometers, clipping easily and unobtrusively onto a student’s belt or waistband, NL-series accelerometers are the tool any student in your program can use for an extended period of time to help them become interested in life long wellness.

NEW-LIFESTYLES is also all about making things smarter for educators.  To help educators make sense of step and MVPA data and to help them show the rest of the world the great things going on inside and outside of physical education classes, NEW-LIFESTYLES builds online lifestyle tracking systems like EveryStepCounts.com.  If an educator is not yet technology-driven, NEW-LIFESTYLES can help by offering tools like CHALLENGE™ charts, calendars, and activity logs that will enhance the educator's ability to change student behavior, while collecting important data for accountability.

NEW-LIFESTYLES has developed several PEP grant packages designed to meet PEP grant requirements. How do you know if our packages are right for your school's program? Just read the following objectives and see if any sound familiar—are they areas your school is working to improve?

If your objective is one or more of the following, then any of NEW-LIFESTYLES’ grant packages is for you!

5 Reasons Why a Pedometer With 7-Day Memory (specifically, the AT-82 pedometer) Is Essential to a physical activity Program

1.  “FOOL-PROOF DATA COLLECTION” –To demonstrate accountability to state standards and school wellness
mandates, easy data collection is essential.  As many

physical educators and wellness coordinators know, data collection can be one of the biggest, most time-consuming

AT-82: Steps, 7-Day Memory, & Clock

hurdles. Most pedometers must be reset daily and their step count totals noted.  Avoid the common, “Uhh, I dunno. Guess I forgot to write down my steps.”  Important data is often lost leaving no way to interpret results.  In this way, a pedometer with 7-day memory provides more reliable physical activity tracking data.

2.  “PAINLESS PARTICIPATION = IMPROVED ADHERENCE” –What if you or your students only remember to write down 3 out of 7 days?  You just can’t rely on human recall.  Come on! Do you remember what you had for lunch yesterday?  How about 3 days ago?  With 7-day memory, you simply don’t have to remember.  Save brain power for more important tasks.  The easier the program is to administer and follow, the more likely everyone will participate.

3.  “EASY MOTIVATION” –Set a weekly goal for students, monitor and praise their progress.  Weekly physical activity totals are just what grant administrators and mandated school wellness policies are looking for.  Success is a sure motivator!

4.  “WALK FOR LESS” –For an incredibly affordable price, you can outfit your physical activity program with an improved version of the “best of the hairspring” pedometers.  Besides adding 7-day memory to the AT-82, we beefed up the clip, and repositioned the RESET and MODE buttons so they followed the principles of smart design.  Congratulations—you’ve just found a great pedometer at an even better price!

5.  “LET’S BE REALISTIC.”  Our lives are busy, so set realistic “weekly” expectations.  Why do something every day when you can do it once a week?  Turn a daily task into a weekly one. Enhance your program and save yourself hours of headache and hassle. Imagine being able to give parents and students a weekly Sunday night homework assignment to log their steps on a calendar or online at EveryStepCounts.com. It's easy to make your physical activity program a family affair with pedometers that have 7-day memory.

Remember the AT-82 isn't the only pedometer NEW-LIFESTYLES offers with 7-day memory, the NL-2000, NL-1000, and NL-800 also store 7 days of data. If you want to go the extra mile with your physical activity program, supplement the AT-82 pedometers with some NL-1000 accelerometers with MVPA™ timers. In addition to step counts over 7 days, the NL-1000 accelerometer will tell you the minutes your students are spending in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA).

PE Central’s LOG IT Delivers Encouragement with Every Step

Sponsored by NEW-LIFESTYLES, PE Central’s online pedometer program LOG IT (www.peclogit.com) is a great way for elementary and middle school students to log their daily physical activity and keep track of steps recorded by their pedometers.  With over 74,000 students

PE Central's LOG IT

and 9,500 teachers currently registered, LOG IT
successfully encourages physical activity, as evidenced by the more than 812,000 miles logged thus far by participants.

A free site for anyone who wants to join in the fun, LOG IT offers a place for kids and teachers to record their steps and miles, while providing interactive “virtual” challenges.  For example, students can hike across the U.S. cooperatively with classmates, or they can choose to engage in friendly class competitions with other classes.  For a challenging group hike across the U.S., teachers can choose any state capital as a starting point and then progress from state capital to state capital, learning individual state facts along the way.  It’s a social studies lesson and a PE activity all in one!

LOG IT doesn’t stop there.  Viewing one’s personal step log, students and teachers can set daily individualized goals.  Once a goal is reached, LOG IT displays a “cool congrats page” and a personalized certificate to print.  Students can also review their log and compare steps with their peers based upon their gender and age to see how they measure up.  LOG IT provides students lots of positive feedback as they successfully log their steps each day, including fun ways to applaud their progress—sounds, graphics and personalized printable certificates.

Using LOG IT’s class reports, managing student physical activity data couldn’t be easier.  Besides viewing the students’ progress, teachers have a wide range of editing options and tools to get students registered, retrieve user names and passwords, add or correct students’ step counts, and edit their class profile.  Teachers can also download step log data into an Excel spreadsheet and print certificates for students to congratulate them on their progress.  Still unsure as to how LOG IT works?  Never fear; the instructions provided on the LOG IT website include extra tips to help teachers get started.

It’s safe to say that LOG IT, like its slogan “Encouraging Kids to Be Physically Active, Step by Step,” delivers what it promises.  NEW-LIFESTYLES is proud to sponsor such a great physical activity tracking tool that helps physical education teachers incorporate technology into the classroom while getting kids moving!
