A couple of studies that are an easy read are the Canadian Journal of Public Health’s Evaluation of quality of commercial pedometers and Obesity Management’s Product Review: Pedometers: A Tool You Can Use in Your Practice.

Second, it is important to understand how step counters work. Step counters—whether pedometers or accelerometers—respond to vertical acceleration—up and down motion. When worn at the waist, that’s vertical acceleration of the body’s movement. They, however, can pick up "false steps" when you hit a bump while riding in a car, they can pick up "false steps" when you remove them from your dresser and place them on your waistband, and they can pick up "false steps" when you use the restroom. That’s the nature of the beast! There is no gnome inside counting your steps. They will also miss some of your lighter steps. Those may be steps taken at speeds less than 2 miles per hour (about 54 meters per minute) or they may be steps taken in soft sand or they may be steps taken while scuffing your feet. A certain sensitivity threshold must be reached for the step counter to register a step. Again, there is no step counting gnome inside the device!

If after reviewing the two previous paragraphs, you still think there is a problem with your step counter’s accuracy, then the issue may have to do with placement or it may have to do with how you are testing your step counter’s accuracy.

Teresa’s Three Rules of Placement
1. Your step counter must be held in a vertical (upright) plane. This is especially true of step counters with suspended lever arm mechanisms or what I call pedometers—the devices that go "click-click" when you wear them. Some step counters with strain gauge mechanisms (silent counters) like the NEW-LIFESTYLES accelerometers are more forgiving in terms of vertical positioning. They can get tilted in a diagonal plane—pushed out of vertical by a protruding tummy—and can still count accurately. 2. Your step counter must be level—not tilted side-to-side. Therefore, putting it on the slant of a pocket will render it incapable of counting steps accurately.
3. Your step counter must be held firmly—one with your body. Therefore, if you wear it on a flimsy waistband, there is a good chance that it will not count your steps accurately.

Testing Your Step Counter’s Accuracy
The following three testing methods are used by those who evaluate the accuracy of research grade step counters.

A. The 20 Step Test (within 5% considered acceptable)

Take this simple test to find out whether you’ve found a good placement on your body for your pedometer:
1. Wearing your pedometer as explained previously, press RESET.
2. Walk 20 steps.
3. Without taking the pedometer off, open the door and check the number of steps it registered.
4. If it doesn’t read 19 to 21 steps, move the pedometer to a different spot on your waistband and repeat until you find the most accurate position.

B. Treadmill Test at 3.0 mph (within +/-1% most of the time considered acceptable)

C. Free-Living Environment Test (within 10% of the YAMAX on normal weight body types or within 10% of the NEW-LIFESTYLES NL-2000 on the normal weight, overweight or obese)

I’ve owned my NEW-LIFESTYLES’ step counter for more than 30 days, and I no longer think it is counting accurately.

None of our pedometers or accelerometers is waterproof or water-resistant. Water can damage your device permanently, but sometimes one can survive an accidental drowning or trip through the washing machine. First, remove the case cover or battery cover. Remove and properly dispose of the battery. Leave the cover off and let your step counter’s innards dry completely. Don’t use a hairdryer as excessive heat may damage the electronics. After the inside is dry install a new battery. If the display shows numbers, you were lucky this time! How to Determine Your Stride Length
When walking, your stride length is the distance from the toe of your front foot to the toe of your back foot (or the heel of the front foot to the heel of the back foot). Before you can program stride length into your pedometer, you must determine your stride length. To do this, you must walk or run a given (measured) distance while counting the number of steps it takes to travel that distance. (Your goal here is simply to find your average stride length.)

There are several ways to measure your stride length. We've listed those here.

1. Lap-Around-Track Method
This is the most accurate method, but it’s not as convenient.
Note: You can measure a distance using your car, but it won’t be as accurate. You also can use a treadmill if it’s calibrated accurately (which isn’t always the case).
1. Go to a college or high school track.
2. Find out the distance of the track. (Most outdoor tracks are 400 meters, although some indoor tracks are 200 meters.)
3. Walk around the inside lane once, counting the number of steps you take. (Or, let your pedometer do the counting for you!)
4. Convert from meters to feet, if necessary. Note: A 400-meter track is 1312 feet. A 200-meter track is 656 feet.
5. Divide the length of the track (in feet) by the number of steps you took.
6. Round to the nearest .25 increment. The answer is your stride length.
Example: Terry took 520 steps around a 400-meter track. The track equals 1312 feet.
1312 feet ÷ 520 steps = 2.52
Terry’s stride length = 2.5

2. The 10-Steps Method
This method yields quick, fairly accurate results.
1. Mark a starting point on the ground.
2. With the fronts of your shoes at the starting point, stand with your feet together.
3. Take 10 steps and stop.
4. Mark your stopping point on the ground (the point at the fronts of your shoes).
5. Measure the distance traveled (in feet).
6. Divide the number of feet you traveled by 10 (the number of steps you took).
7. Round to the nearest .25 increment. The answer is your stride length.

3. Approximating
This method is the easiest, but least accurate:

Females
1. Multiply .413 by your height in inches.
2. Divide by 12.
3. Round to the nearest .25 increment. The result is an estimate of your step (stride) length.
Males
1. Multiply .415 by your height in inches.
2. Divide by 12.
3. Round to the nearest .25 increment. The result is an estimate of your step (stride) length.

No, you don't need to turn your pedometer off, nor can you. If you aren't going to use your pedometer for a long period, it is a good idea to remove the battery.

If your DIGI-WALKER pedometer fails two of the tests, then it probably needs to be recalibrated. Follow these steps to recalibrate your DIGI-WALKER pedometer.

STEPS TO CALIBRATE HERE

Severe undercounting is usually the result of the coiled spring getting caught on the suspended lever arm. Remove your pedometer’s case cover—find the slot at the bottom of your closed unit; insert a coin in the slot and give it a twist. The cover will "pop" off. Locate the coiled spring—it’s just to the left of the battery. If the spring has a wave in it (similar to the one in the photo), the left side of the spring is caught on the lever arm. Use your finger or a tweezers to gently and carefully coax the spring free of the lever arm. Once the coiled spring is straightened out, your DIGI-WALKER pedometer should function normally.

There are a few things to try in this situation:
1. Perform a self-test.
Hold down all the buttons simultaneously for five seconds.
When the display goes blank, remove your fingers from the buttons.
Your display should show "88888" and then "0". If not, continue to Step 2.
2. Remove the battery. (Note: Removing the battery will clear all your programmed settings. You will need to reenter them.)
Reinsert the battery. Your display should read "0". If this doesn’t work, you probably broke your LCD (liquid crystal diode). We suggest purchasing a new pedometer from our online product catalog.

If your pedometer’s screen resembles the one to the left, your LCD (liquid crystal diode) is broken, and you’ll need to purchase a new pedometer. Visit our online product catalog. (Note: Broken LCDs may also present as a blank display or a display with irregular segments.)

Please remember that your NL-2000 accelerometer resets automatically at midnight, so daily resets are unnecessary. To reset your NL-2000 accelerometer’s steps, activity calories, total calories and the days in memory (this does NOT reset the time or your personal data), press the STEP/CAL button until the arrow points to steps. Then press and hold the SET button. Do not let go until the steps say "0." It will look like you are going back into the setting mode to set the clock, but continue to hold the SET button until the steps go to "0." You will only do this once, as the unit will reset to "0" on its own at midnight each night.

If you don’t have a stiff thumbnail, then try a needle nose pliers and pry it open/out.

The most likely cause is a dead battery. The NL-2000 accelerometer uses a CR-2016 battery. For battery installation instructions refer to the NL-2000 Accelerometer’s Battery Installation Guide.

If a new battery doesn’t solve the problem, you may have broken your NL-2000 accelerometer’s LCD (liquid crystal diode). In that case you’ll need to purchase a new accelerometer. Visit our online product catalog.

Your clock may not be set, or it may be set incorrectly. Remember that the NL-2000 accelerometer’s clock must be set to military (24 hour) time. Press the SET button once to enter the set mode. Use the +/- buttons on the right side to set the correct hour. (For example, if it is 4pm, set the time to "16:00".)

If your clock is set correctly, your NL-2000 accelerometer may have a loose battery connection. Refer to Troubleshooting Point NLA-13.

One of your NL-2000 accelerometer’s four buttons may be stuck underneath the plastic around it. Use your fingernail or a tweezers to carefully coax it out.

A flashing display may also indicate that you are in the NL-2000 accelerometer’s memory mode in which case you can either cycle completely through all 7 days by pressing the memory button until you return to the real time mode or you can simply wait 5 seconds and the device will revert to the real time mode.

As a last resort, try removing and re-inserting your NL-2000 accelerometer’s battery. Refer to the NL-2000 Accelerometer’s Battery Installation Guide for step-by-step instructions.

The NL-2000 accelerometer combines not only your BMR (basal metabolic rate) and Activity Calories (CALS), but also includes a small amount of calories for minor movements (head, arm movements, etc.) and an additional amount for the calories your body burns to digest food (thermic effect of food calories).

The smooth metal clip on the NL-2000 accelerometer may slide on thin, slick waistbands. To hold it more firmly on your waistband, turn the NL-2000 toward you while your wear it. This way the waistband serves to hold it tightly to your body. Another alternative is to wrap a rubber band around the clip. The rubber band will provide added grip strength.

Occasionally my NL-2000 loses my settings and I have to re-enter the time and my personal stats—gender, age, height and weight.

It is possible that during the battery changing process, you bent the contacts that complete the battery connection. If you don’t mind doing a little tinkering and have access to a small eyeglass screwdriver, you can tighten the connections yourself. Here’s how to do it: First, use your thumbs to slide your NL-2000 accelerometer’s top cover up and off, as you would when you change the battery. Next, set your NL-2000 accelerometer down on a flat surface and remove with an eyeglass screwdriver the 4 screws that are now visible. Gently remove the inner cover and locate the long metal connector that is touching the battery (it has a double-pronged fork at the end and looks like a snake’s tongue). This is the piece you need to tighten down. Put your screwdriver underneath the base of the "tongue" and press down on the forked end of the tongue to give it a little stronger bend. This will ensure that the battery connection is tight. Replace your NL-2000 accelerometer’s inner cover and tighten the 4 screws. Be careful not to tighten the screws too tightly as that can interfere with the strain gauge’s ability to detect steps. Slide the top cover back on, and you’re done.

The NL-2000 accelerometer does not calculate distance, so you do not need to measure or enter your stride length into the device.

Remember that the NL-800 and NL-1000 accelerometers reset automatically at midnight, so daily resets are unnecessary. To reset the NL-800’s steps and memory and the NL-1000’s steps, activity time, and memory (this does NOT reset the time on either device or the stride length on the NL-1000) press the MODE button until the arrow points to steps. Then press and hold the SET button. Do NOT let go until you see "CL" (clear) on the display. Release the SET button and the display will reset and show "0" steps.

Hold the sides of your NL-800/NL-1000 accelerometer’s clip with one hand. Then, place your other hand’s thumb behind the tab with the sticker that says "OPEN." Use your thumb to slightly lift and push the tab up and away. The "door" will drop open. For some individuals it is easier to do this while wearing the device. Therefore, if you are still having trouble, place your accelerometer on your waistband and use your thumb to slightly lift and push the tab with the "OPEN" sticker away from your body. The "door" will drop open.

The most likely cause is a dead battery. The NL-800 and NL-1000 use a CR-2032 battery. Please refer to our NL-800/NL-1000 User’s Guide for battery installation instructions.

You’ll find a small gray RESET button underneath the battery compartment cover. It will reset the LIFECORDER accelerometers and all of their internal memory. All settings and data will be lost. To perform the reset, use a ball- point pen or the end of a paper clip to press and hold the RESET button. The LIFECORDER EX will sound a long tone to signal that the reset is complete. The LIFECORDER PLUS will sound one long tone and display "RESET OK?" on the display (LCD). To execute the reset, press the RESET button once more. The LIFECORDER PLUS sounds a quick short, then long recognition tone.

Please refer to the invoice that shipped with your LIFECORDER PLUS accelerometer. Both the URL (web address) and the login information (ID and password) were provided on your invoice. If you’ve misplaced your invoice, email Customer Service, provide the name under which you ordered the device and request the information.

The LIFECORDER measures steps and intensity and uses this information to calculate energy expenditure. Every 4 second period, the LIFECORDER determines an ‘Activity Level’ which is determined using not only the number of steps but the accelerometric signal (physical intensity) as well. These 4 second Activity Levels, where 1-3 is light, 4-6 is moderate, and 7-9 is vigorous, are accumulated in the internal memory and can be downloaded and exported as a raw CSV file using the research version (P.A.A.S. Professional and P.A.A.S. Lifestyle Coach software packages)of the software.

Exported reports show the total number of 4 second bouts accumulated in each intensity category (0-9). The example below shows the intensity levels and the number of 4 second periods spent in each level (each row represents one day):

The LIFECORDER also stores the Activity Level computed in a two minute epoch for each 24-hour day (time stamp is on the left column; each of the four right columns represent a portion of a single day from 8:38pm to 9:06pm). A value of 0.5 represents 'micro activity' which is movement that is not considered to be ambulatory.

The LIFECORDER accelerometers store physical activity data into non-volatile memory every 30 minutes. When changing the battery, one can lose a maximum of 30 minutes of data.
